In the 1970s, Bertien van Manen (1935-2024) photographed female labor migrants and the wives of labor migrants who came to the Netherlands for family reunification. She captured the lives of Turkish, Moroccan, Tunisian, Spanish, Yugoslavian, Portuguese, Greek, and Italian women. These women were photographed at home, at work, during parties, and leisure activities, often struggling to survive in a foreign culture. These photographs formed the basis for her first book 'Vrouwen te Gast', published in 1979.
In 2024, Bertien revisited her original photographs and texts to create a new, contemporary version of her first work. For I am the only woman there, she updated the book with newly discovered photographs from her archive and new texts, written by herself and Kim Knoppers.
