We Are All Made of Glue, Marina Lewycka
We Are All Made of Glue is the third novel by British author Marina Lewycka. The book follows the unexpected friendship between Georgina Sinclair, a recently divorced freelance journalist, and Mrs. Shapiro, a 92-year-old Jewish emigrant living in a dilapidated mansion in North London. As Georgina tries to get her own life back on track, she becomes increasingly involved in the chaotic world of Mrs. Shapiro, who is surrounded by sneaky real estate agents, social workers, and a house full of cats. The story intertwines humor with serious themes such as the Holocaust and the displacement of Palestinians, offering a poignant look at old age and loneliness.
The title We Are All Made of Glue refers to various themes in the book. Georgina Sinclair, the main character, works for a magazine called Adhesives in the Modern World, which publishes articles about glue and epoxy resins. This professional background serves as a metaphor for how people and relationships come together and fall apart, just as glue holds things together or lets them go.
Additionally, the title symbolizes the connections between the characters in the story, especially the unexpected friendship between Georgina and Mrs. Shapiro. Despite their differences and the chaos in their lives, they find ways to support and connect with each other, reinforcing the underlying message of the book.
Marina Lewycka is a British novelist of Ukrainian descent, currently residing in Sheffield, England. She was born in a refugee camp in Kiel, Germany, after World War II. Lewycka is known for her humorous and insightful novels, including A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian and Two Caravans.
