Penelope Mortimer (1918-1999) was a British journalist, biographer and novelist, born in Rhyl, Wales. Her work often focused on the complexities of family life and personal relationships, and her writing style influenced feminist fiction in the 1960s. Her personal life was turbulent; she had six children from different relationships and struggled with depression. She was married to the journalist Charles Dimont and later to the writer and lawyer John Mortimer
