Italy has enriched civilisations for centuries, from the Romans to the modern temples of design and gastronomy of the twentieth century. Nowhere more so than in Florence, birthplace of the Renaissance. Arts and science alike flourished under the patronage of the ruling Medici family. It was this world of discovery that lured the miniature artist Giovanna Garzoni to Florence. After periods at the courts of Naples and Turin, she came to work as court miniaturist to the Medici. Her 'gentle art' of still life, flower and portrait paintings looks as fresh and three-dimensional today, as must then have been a contrast to mannerism and baroque. Only recently receiving reappraisal by art historians, her small surviving oeuvre reflects a quiet stillness and timeless beauty.
Renowned cookery author Lorenza de Medici contributes a selection of recipes to complement the still lifes of Tuscan produce. They draw from the natural ingredients and rustic simplicity for which this regional cuisine is famed.
