From the 1920s to the 1950s, an advertising gimmick made its wav into the purses, pockets, and kitchen drawers of millions of Americans. The giveaway matchbook, from its humble origins as an entrepreneurial gamble, quickly cautht on and became on of the most popular means ever found of putting promotional images into the hands of the public.
Free, small, and disposable matchbooks were not only a highly successful marketing tool for a wide variety of products, they were also the repositories of much anonymous design creativity. Self-contained mini fantasies of ocean travel, bathing beauties, and tropical locales pervaded the imagerv, as did hand-lettered typography, stylized illustration, and eye-catching color.
Long a favorlte of collectors, vintage matchbooks are ready for the limelight once again. This colorful celebration brings their art and history to life. with pulp panache and visual zing.
Monte Beauchamp's work has appeared in Communications Arts, Graphics, Print, American Illustrations, and The Society of Illustrators Annual.
He has won five New York Festival Awards for excellence in print and television communications and served as a jury member for American Illustration and The Society of Illustrators. He is the founder and editor of the graphics/illustration/comix annual BLAB! and the editor of New & Used Blab! (Chronicle Books). He lives and works in Chicago.
