Jean Prouvé, Penelope Rowland
Hardcover
Compact Design Portfolio: Jean Prouvé is a glorious introduction to the work of this brilliantly inventive 'constructeur'.
In explaining his genius Le Corbusier may have put it best when hé observed that Prouvé combined "the soul Of an engineer with that of an architect," Surely Prouve's inspired use of forms and materials in the design of everything from childrenrs chairs to portable houses derived from these entwined passions.
From a family of artists and craftsmen, Prouvé had a vision that design could improve life for all people, While many of his early commissions were for wealthy individuals and companies, it was not long before he branched out into mass manufacture, producing furnishings, even building parts for institutional clients. Indeed, his ideas and explorations concerning prefabricated architectural elements and the construction of metal buildings brought him numerous commissions before and after World War II. A true visionary humanist, Prouvé was one of the few designers who successfully applied the social principles of early modernism to design throughout his career.
With an insightful text by Penelope Rowlands and dozens of visual references to his master works, this book is both a valuable introduction and reference guide to Prouvé's creative output.
